In this paper we are concerned with Trudinger's inequality for Riesz potentials of functions in Musielak–Orlicz spaces.     

In vitro Antioxidant Activity of Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol,Compared to Vitamin E

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is the prevalent ubiquinone in human organism, largely present in its reduced form, ubiquinol (QH₂), to which the antioxidant, free radical scavenger activity is ascribed by many authors. However, some studies indicate that also the oxidized form presents some effect in preventing the cellular oxidative stress. In this article four in vitro chemical test methods (TEAC, FRAP, DPPH, and BR) were used to assess the free radical scavenging power of CoQ10, QH₂, and vitamin E. The results showed that CoQ10 is almost ineffective, while in three of the tests QH₂ presents a higher antioxidant activity than vitamin E. From these results, it can be concluded that the interconversion CoQ10?QH₂ leading to the prevalence of QH₂ in biological tissues is responsible for the antioxidant action of coenzyme Q10 in living organisms.     

Novel rapid liquid chromatography tandem masspectrometry method for vemurafenib and metabolites in human plasma,including metabolite concentrations at steady state

A novel, rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography tandem–mass spectrometry method for quantification of vemurafenib in human plasma, that also for the first time allows for metabolite semi‐quantification, was developed and validated to support clinical trials and therapeutic drug monitoring. Vemurafenib was analysed by precipitation with methanol followed by a 1.9 min isocratic liquid chromatography tandem masspectrometry analysis using an Acquity BEH C₁₈ column with methanol and formic acid using isotope labelled internal standards. Analytes were detected in multireaction monitoring mode on a Xevo TQ. Semi‐quantification of vemurafenib metabolites was performed using the same analytical system and sample preparation with gradient elution. The vemurafenib method was successfully validated in the range 0.5–100 μg/mL according to international guidelines. The metabolite method was partially validated owing to the lack of commercially available reference materials. For the first time concentration levels at steady state for melanoma patients treated with vemurafenib is presented. The low abundance of vemurafenib metabolites suggests that they lack clinical significance. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Coumarin‐tethered (benz)imidazolium salts and their silver(I) N‐heterocyclic carbene complexes: Synthesis,characterization, crystal structure and antibacterial studies

A series of new sterically modulated chlorocoumarin‐substituted (benz)imidazolium salts and their bis‐N‐heterocyclic carbene silver(I) complexes were prepared and characterized. The complexes were prepared in good yields following the in situ deprotonation method by treating azolium salts with silver(I) oxide in the dark. All the compounds were characterized using various spectroscopic and analytical methods. Additionally, one of the benzimidazolium salts was characterized using single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction technique. In this salt, intermolecular π–π stacking interactions operate between benzimidazole as well as coumarin heterocyclic systems with adjacent molecules. In the preliminary antibacterial studies, the silver complexes were found more active than the corresponding salts against a panel of bacterial strains. Interestingly, the complexes displayed improved antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli strain, comparable with that of the standard drug ampicillin.     

Electro-Optical and Thermophysical Characterization of Poly (Tripropylene Glycol Di-Acrylate)/Liquid Crystal Composite Materials Prepared by Polymerization Induced Phase Separation

Abstract

This work examines the development and characterization of tripropylene glycol di-acrylate/liquid crystal E7 (TPGDA/LC E7) PDLCs composite materials (polymer-dispersed-liquid-crystals). These systems were produced by UV irradiation photopolymerization (PIPS) of a mixture of the monomer tripropylene glycol di-acrylate (TPGDA) and the liquid crystal E7 (LC E7, a mixture of three cyano-biphenyl and one cyano-terphenyl LCs), in the presence of 2?wt% (of the acrylate/E7 mixture) of a photoinitiator. Electro-optical, thermal and optical characterization was used to understand the effect of the LC concentration on the electro-optical and thermo-physical properties of these materials. Polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies were performed to observe the system morphology and to determine the transition temperatures of these materials, both as a function of their composition. The findings showed a slight variation of the nematic-isotropic transition temperature, T_NI, of the LC E7 and of the glass transition temperature, T_g, of the TPGDA polymeric matrix as a function of the mass percentage of the LC E7. A very good electro-optical response for the composition 30/70?wt % TPGDA/LC E7 was obtained.     

Optimal error estimates for an approximation of degenerate parabolic problems

A fully discrete scheme for a class of multidimensional degenerate parabolic equations is proposed. The discretization is given by $supoesup piecewise linear finite elements in space and backward differences in time (the smoothing procedure is avoided). Numerical integration is used; hence the proposed method is easy to implement. Optimal error estimates in energy norms are proved for the solutions.

We develop a calculus structure in the Banach lattice introduced in a preceding paper, having in mind an approximation problem appearing in non-smooth optimization. We show that the essential results depend as much on the order structure as on the analytical one.

Unconventional stereoselective one-pot synthesis of Knoevenagel-type indoles via in situ condensation of iminium salts with active methylene reagents

A simple one-pot procedure for the stereoselective synthesis of Knoevenagel-type indoles is described. The method is based on the in situ reaction of indole iminium salts (four of them are fully characterized) with acyclic symmetrical and unsymmetrical active methylene reagents in the presence of triethylamine. In general, the overall yields are moderate to good. Some of relevant reaction parameters and steric effects affecting stereoselectivity are discussed.     

DISCRETE UNIFORM STRUCTURES AND QUASITOPOI

It is known that no non-trivial subcategory of the category of topological spares is a quasitopos in the sense of Penon. The purpose of this note is to establish the existence of a proper class of sub-categories of the category of uniform spaces which are quasitopoi. These subcategories are generated by certain proximally discrete uniform spaces which correspond to each infinite regular cardinal.
